Click to ViewSabbath keepers use the false argument that since the Sabbath day is called an "eternal" and "perpetual" law, that Christians must keep it!

Yet all these are called "eternal" and "Perpetual" in the Bible yet they are abolished: Feast of Unleavened Bread: Ex 12:17; Burnt offering: Ex 29:39-42; Day of Atonement: Lev 23:28-31. According to Sabbatarian logic, we should still have animal sacrifices!

A. According to Sabbatarian logic, if we must keep the weekly Sabbath, we should still have animal sacrifices and all these Jewish things that are abolished!

If the Sabbath day endures forever because of the words, "forever" "eternal" "everlasting" "Permanent" (all translated from Hebrew "olam" then so too are all the other Jewish holy days!

Sabbath Day:

Exodus 31:16-17

Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 'It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.'

Sabbaths:

Exodus 31:13

Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: 'Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.

Feast of Unleavened Bread:

Exodus 12:17

'So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance.

Grain offering:

Lev 6:15-18; 23:13-14

Then one of them shall lift up from it a handful of the fine flour of the grain offering, with its oil and all the incense that is on the grain offering, and he shall offer it up in smoke on the altar, a soothing aroma, as its memorial offering to the Lord. ... Every male among the sons of Aaron may eat it; it is a permanent ordinance throughout your generations, from the offerings by fire to the Lord.

Burnt offering:

Exodus 29:39-42

"One lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight... This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord, where I will meet you to speak with you.

Burn incense:

Exodus 30:8

And when Aaron lights the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense on it, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations.

Sin offering:

Exodus 30:10

And Aaron shall make atonement upon its horns once a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonement; once a year he shall make atonement upon it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord."

Anointing oil:

Exodus 30:31

And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations.

Atonement yearly:

Ex 30:10

And Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; he shall make atonement on it with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.

Day of Atonement:

Leviticus 23:28-31

And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Heave offering:

Numbers 15:21

Of the first of your ground meal you shall give to the Lord a heave offering throughout your generations.

Tabernacle work:

Numbers 18:22-23

Hereafter the children of Israel shall not come near the tabernacle of meeting, lest they bear sin and die. But the Levites shall perform the work of the tabernacle of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a statute forever, throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

Priests washing:

Ex 30:21

So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they may not die; and it shall be a perpetual statute for them, for Aaron and his descendants throughout their generations.

Feast of tabernacles:

Lev 23:34-43

You shall thus celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. 'You shall live in booths for seven days; all the native-born in Israel shall live in booths

Passover:

Ex 12:14

Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance.

Carry breast piece:

Ex 28:29

And Aaron shall carry the names of the sons of Israel in the breast piece of judgment over his heart when he enters the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually

B. The meaning of forever and throughout their generations:

  1. Hebrew: "olam" translated: forever, perpetual, everlasting, eternal, permanent. Forever does not mean never ending in scripture but age lasting:
  2. Jonah was in the fish forever? No! 3 Days! Jonah 2:6
  3. Righteous earthly kings will have throne established forever? No only till they die. Prov 29:14
  4. Throughout their generations is limited to the Jewish age.
  5. The Jewish age stopped at Jesus. That is the end of their generation by genealogy: Mt 1
  6. The Sabbath, like all other Jewish institutions were only to last throughout their generations:

C. If the Sabbath day is eternal based Ex 31:13-17, then so is the penalty of death, which no Sabbatarians enforces or even thinks is valid today!

D. Sabbatarians assert that since the Sabbath was a memorial to 6 day creation that it will endure forever! Yet the present heavens and earth will completely be uncreated and be replaced by a new one:

  1. 2 Co 4:18 for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
  2. Rev 20:11 heaven and earth fled from his presence
  3. Rev 21:4 the first things have passed away
  4. Rev 21:1,23; 22:5 No longer any sea, night, sun or moon
  5. 2 Pe 3:10 Earth and works will be burned up
  6. Heb 12:25-29 created things to be removed
  7. Jn 18:36 My kingdom is not of this world/ realm
  8. Sabbatarians often stress that Mt 5:17-18 teaches that the Sabbath will endure as long as creation. This argument is wrong, but even if we grant them this point, they still must admit that the law will be abolished when the heaven and the earth are! Sabbatarian theology is not even consistent within itself! Mt 5:17-18 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished."

F. Actual Sabbatarian argument based upon Ps 111:7:

Seventh-day Adventists falsely argue that God's commandments will stand forever because of passages like: Ps 111:7 "The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness."

Sabbatarian argument based upon Ps 111:7 refuted:

  1. How do Sabbatarians know this is the 10 commandments only? The text surely does not say. It does not say the 10 commandments, but "all His commandments"
  2. 1 Cor 14:37 says: "If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's commandment." Paul was not writing about the 10 commandments.
  3. "All His commandments" clearly includes ceremonial laws.
  4. Sabbatarians are once again guilty of using circular reasoning and inventing a definition of "commandment" that is too limited and entirely unbiblical.
