The case of "Muffin"
A 24 year old Christian named Brian, sought counseling for depression. He
had dropped out of school and was therefore only able to get minimum wage
employment in a coffee and donut store. He was getting warnings from his
boss for spending too much time in the bathroom crying. This went on for
several months. Brian told his boss that he was convinced he was a terrible
person. The boss, trying to help Brian, asked why he felt this way? Brian
replied that earlier in the shift that day, he had dropped a tray of
muffins on the floor and had thrown them into the garbage without telling
him. The boss gave him a hug and sent him home for the day with pay. He
told Brian he was doing fine in his job and to return the next morning for
work.
That night Brian went to Wednesday evening Bible study and several of the
members became concerned when Brain cried in the bathroom the entire hour.
They asked Brian what was wrong and Brian replied that he was a bad person
because he had dropped the muffins that day at work.
A Christian named James was told the story and asked to meet with Brian the
following day for coffee to discuss the depression. James told Brian that
it was foolish and illogical for him to feel he was a bad person for
dropping a pan of muffins. James said, "Something is bothering you. What
are you doing that God is not pleased about?" After a bit of discussion,
Brian was hard pressed to come up with a more reasonable explanation of why
he thought he was so bad. Then he said, Ok you are right, "Well my feet
really smell." James replied that this was absurd and foolish to feel bad
about yourself for that reason. When Doug had finally exhausted his
desperate effort to cover his sin with smokescreens, with great difficulty,
he acknowledged an ongoing deviant sex practitioner relationship with a
man.
Brian terminated the sinful relationship, made public confession and asking
forgiveness of God.
With some counseling from the elders of the church and a thorough
restructuring of his life, Brian had a complete and lasting "recovery" from
his depression.
Discussion:
This is also a typical example of avoidance, denial and smoke screen.
Several times Brian was asked to confess his sin of deviant sex
practitioner sex. First he denied, then offered confession to a "lesser
sin" in an attempt to hid the real "big sin". This went on until it was
clear that James was not buying any of the absurd confessions. Full
discussion of reactions of the person being counseled to your advice and
deny, get angry then confess sin.
deviant sex and lesbianism are learned behaviours that can be unlearned.
While genetics may predispose of an individual to be the characteristic
"gentle, intuitive and artistic", this is only one of the 8 commonalities
most deviant sex practitioner's share.
Benefits from behaviour: This illustrates the Law of Narcissistic Behaviour
Choice (NBC) EDS-7.7.1.NBC
Escape duty or life situation: EDS-7.4.4. Rather than repent of his
deviant sex practitioner encounters he chose to violate his conscience. His
depression was his escape from the reality he was in rebellion to God.
Smokescreen for secret sin that is soon to be discovered:
EDS-7.4.10. He knew that sooner or later, he would be exposed for his
sinful behaviour as a lesbian. His depression would appear to other
Christians to be a larger problem than his immorality. His anger when
confronted is another example of behavioral smokescreen.
Avoid deserved rebuke, criticism, shame: EDS-7.4.11. His depression
was a way to lessen any rebuke. The preacher might say: "He's already so
depressed, perhaps we should wait till he is better before we confront him
about his sin."
Sympathy: EDS-7.4.5. Doug viewed shame and sympathy as the two
choices set before his. His depression garnered the much needed sympathy
that he really didn't deserve. It gave him positive praise to make him feel
better about the secret sin.
Self-punishment for personal failures or to ease a guilty
conscience: EDS-7.4.12. His depression was also a way of punishing himself.
In the eyes of God a lesbian fling is one thing, but being depressed for
the rest of the time may show God he was not happy with himself.
Diagnostic laws that are seen illustrated in the case of "Muffin":
Doug calculated that the costs of acting depressed were less than
the benefits he derived from hiding his sin. This illustrates the Law of
Derivative Personal Benefit (DPB) EDS-7.7.2.DPB
His depression deflected attention away from his fornication. This
illustrates the Law of Habitual Smokescreen Decoy (HSD) EDS-7.7.10.HSD
His depression was a behaviour in advance of his coming out of the
closet as a fornicator. This illustrates the Law of Anticipatory Warthog
Psychosis (AWP) EDS-7.7.13.AWP
Note: Although these are based upon real case stories, the names and
details have been changed to hide the identities of the people. This
practice follows the standards of medical case history publication.
