The archaeologist who has been overseeing an archaeological survey of the site, Professor Emmanuel Anati, believes it to have been the mountain of the Ten Commandments (i.e. Mount Horeb). He is wrong in this assumption, but he has indeed found one of the most important places in the Exodus story. for this is the true site of Kadesh Barnea the holy gathering place where the multitude of Israel prepared to enter the Promised I and where they commemorated their covenant with Yahweh for the first time on ... Aaron was buried in a small cave atop Mount Hor, overlooking Petra, where a tiny whitewashed Muslim shrine dedicated to the 'Prophet Harun' still stands to this day. 154: Mt. Karkom, Israel
We feel the most compelling reason for rejecting Har Karkom as Biblical Mt. Sinai, is its location at least 35 km inside the Biblical boundaries of the promised land. Gen 15:18 and many other verses, says that the wadi Al-Arish (River of Egypt) is the southern boundary of Israel. For this reason alone we must reject Har Karkom as the location of Mt. Sinai. Emmanuel Anati's proposals must be rejected because it contradicts the Bible. Israel's "40 years in the wilderness" was not inside the promise land. Others believe Karkom is Kadesh Barnea, but again, neither Kadesh or Mt. Sinai were inside the promised land: "The archaeologist who has been overseeing an archaeological survey of the site [Mt. Karkom], Professor Emmanuel Anati, believes it to have been the mountain of the Ten Commandments (i.e. Mount Horeb). If we used the Bible exclusively, we can know only 3 of the of the 50 exodus stops for certain: Goshen, Ezion Geber, Mt. Nebo. Of the 7 wilderness areas Israel passed through, we only know one for certain: Wilderness of Shur. The search for the exodus route has produced many different options: Mt. Paul said in Gal 4:25, that Mt. Sinai is in ... But in 1916 AD, Kadesh was moved about 6 km north of Kades to Ein el-Qudeirat. 14. In 1914, Woolley and Lawrence excavated Qudeirat and declared it to be Kadesh Barnea. 156: Mt. Hor, Moserah: Aaron's Mountain (Jebel Haroun) at Petra
He comments on how there is a need to redefine the land of Edom in a new way. He suggests that Edom was not limited to the transjordan, but right beside Kades in the land of Judah: " "This identification, with its linkings, necessitates the re-shaping of much of the geography of the southern border of Palestine and the neighboring regions, as indicated in the maps, cyclopedias, commentaries, and guide-books, now in common use. For example, as the westernmost limit of Edom is not indicated in the Bible except by its relation to Kadesh-barnea, that limit now passes from an unknown to a known quantity, by the fixing of a site which is described as just beyond it. So, also, the traditional Mount Hor must be recognized as an impossible Mount Hor; and the central and northern Arabah must no longer be counted a main camping-ground of the Israelites in their wanderings." (Kadesh-Barnea, Henry Clay Trumbull, 1884 AD, p 320) In 1884 AD, Henry Trumbull chose Jebel Madurah as Mt. Hor: "Yet, all ... ...

Traditionally, ascent of Akrabbim, has always been looked for on the western edge of the Arabah valley, but we feel this is wrong and that an easterly ascending path towards modern Jordan is the best choice. ... I felt as though I had just "resurrected" someone straight out of the Bible. There is something else unusual about this bulla. It read: "Belonging to Yehuchal ben (the son of) Shelemiyahu ben Shovi." Thus we now know the name of Yehuchal's grandfather, as well as his father. Why did Yehuchal mention his grandfather on his seal? This was hardly the standard practice. Perhaps his grandfather was a distinguished, well-known figure in his own right. In Yigal Shiloh's excavation in the 1980s, adjacent to our site, he found 45 bullae in the destruction layer of one of the rooms.
