303: Extra-Biblical oral apostolic tradition does not exist today
So tradition includes not only the body of belief and practice unique to Roman Catholicism, but also involves the teaching authority of the church itself at any given time enabling it to define further traditions. The whole idea of tradition as it is now found in the Roman Catholic Church was not defined until 1546 by the Council of Trent, and then it was done to counter the reformers of the Protestant Reformation who demanded scriptural authority for religious practices. 323: Have you been Baptized with The Wrong Baptism?
wrote a letter to the church in ancient Rome, the sixth book of the New Testament, commonly called Romans. In it he said, "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life". (See the sixth Chapter of Romans, verse 4). Please observe that Bible baptism involves a burial and a resurrection. Hence, we conclude that baptism is an immersion. This view is in complete accord with the practice of the first preachers in the church. When Philip baptized an Ethiopian, they both went down into the water, Philip baptized the man, and then they both came up out of the water, clearly a case of immersion. You will want to study this case of New Testament baptism which is described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 8, verses 26 through 40. Now, look at question three: Why should one be baptized? In Romans 1:16 the apostle Paul says, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek." So we see that the gospel of Christ is God's only power unto salvation. It is by the gospel or good news that God saves us. What does the Bible say that the gospel is that saves us? This, in turn, leads the sinner to determine to turn away from sin, for we read, "Or despiseth thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?" (Rom. 2: 4). An example of this part of conversion is found in Acts 2 in response to Peter's preaching of Christ. The Bible says, "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in the heart and said unto Peter, 'Men and brethren what shall we do?' Then Peter said unto them, repent ... When a person believes in Christ, repents of sin, confesses Christ and is baptized into Christ for the remission of sins, he is converted. Only then has he been born of water and of the Spirit as referred to in John 3: 3-5. Then the Lord adds him to the body, the Church, the Kingdom of God (Acts 2: 47). 327: The Canon of Marcion the heretic
God's providence gave us the 27 book New Testament Canon, not the church. God, not men decided the canon. This providence does not mean that church leaders were inspired in their selecting the canon, only that God had his eye on the scriptures the whole time and brought about His will to form the Bible we see today! The Canon of Marcion the heretic Go to: "Canon of the Bible" Home Page The Canon of Marcion the heretic I. Who was Marcion and when did he live? By 144 AD, at age 34, Marcion had caused such a stir, that his teachings were the subject of an investigation and ... When we study Marcion, it should be obvious that the vast majority of New Testament books were already recognized as part of the New Testament canon. Marcion's specific removal and denial of many New Testament books from his own canon, including all of Peter, James and John, proves they were already in use between 125-144 AD and ... ...

334: Why Be Baptized?
... When we remember that Peter was speaking by the inspiration of God, this verse should forever settle this question in our own minds. Baptism, according to the Bible, is not because we have already been saved. But Does baptism really wash away sins? Some say no! The Bible says yes. In other related scriptures we read that "Baptism doth also now save us" (I Peter 3: 20,21). The Apostle Paul adds that we are not even in Christ until we have been scripturally baptized. We read this in Galatians 3: 27, and in Romans 6: 3,4). If you have never obeyed the Lord by being baptized for the remission of sins as the Bible requires, may we encourage you to do so today. 335: Lesson 20: Preaching In Worship
Only by believing and obeying the truth can we be made free from sin. But what is the truth? Jesus says in John 17:17, "Sanctify them by your truth, your word is truth." The word of God is the only truth that will make us free so we can go to heaven. The word of men cannot make us free, but will cause us to be lost. All things preached must come from the word of God. We are told in 1 Peter 4:11, "If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God." The pulpits of our land ring out with what speakers personally think and believe. But how do we know whether a preacher is preaching from God's word or from his own opinion? We must do as the church at Berea did concerning the apostle Paul's preaching in Acts 17:11, they "searched the scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so." But many men today, as they did in the first century, are preaching a perverted gospel. In Galatians 1:6-8 we read, "I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him that called you in the grace ... ...

... But granting that many absurdities were attached to the tradition, the fact remains that the impression that Hadrian early in his reign contemplated the rebuilding of the temple and city, was widely diffused among the Jews (cf. the references in Derenbourg, n. 13) and we are confronted with the question: how did this impression arise? The question becomes the more pertinent when we find that the impression was shared by the church fathers. A goodly number believed that Hadrian had given permission to the Jews to restore the temple, while others assign an early date for the founding of Aelia Capitolina. Thus the Chronacon PawAale says that the founding of the city and the Jewish rebellion occurred in 119. But the most remarkable passage occurs in chapter my of the De menauris ei pondenbus of Epiphanius, of Eleutheropolis in Palestine, bishop at Cyrenaica in 367. Isaiah 51:17. Even if these are quotes from early Christian hymns, they were inspired hymns, just as 1 Corinthians 14:26 says: "What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification."
