402: Carpenter, Edward: The Origins of Pagan and Christian Beliefs
"Those doctrines which we have described in the preceding chapters-doctrines of Sin and Sacrifice, a Saviour, the Eucharist, the Trinity, the Virgin-birth, and so forth-were in their various forms seething, so to speak, all around. It was impossible for any new religious synthesis to escape them; all it could do would be to appropriate them, and to give them perhaps a colour of its own. Thus it is into the midst of this germinating mass that we must imagine the various pagan cults, like fertilising streams, descending. To trace all these streams would of course be an impossible task; but it may be of use, as an example of the process, to take the case of some particular belief. Let us take the belief in the coming of a Saviour-god ; and this will be the more suitable as it is a belief which has in the past been commonly held to be distinctive of Christianity. Of course we know now that it is not in any sense distinctive, but, that the long tradition of the Saviour comes down from the ... ...

404: Jewish Messianic Expectation at the time of Christ
The Jews at the time of Jesus Christ misunderstood much of what the Messianic prophecy was really predicting. They never dreamed the land promise was heaven, the restored temple was the body of Christ, the restored kingdom was the church and that the messiah was the liberator over the devil not Rome. 3. Josephus notes the expectation of the rise of a warrior king: a. "But now, what did most elevate them in undertaking this war, was an ambiguous oracle that was also found in their sacred writings, how, "about that time, one from their country should become governor of the habitable earth." (313) The Jews took this prediction to belong to themselves in particular and many of the wise men were thereby deceived in their determination. Now, this oracle certainly denoted the government of Vespasian (69-79 AD) , who was appointed emperor in Judea. (314) However, it is not possible for men to avoid fate, although they see it beforehand. (315) But these men interpreted some of these signals ... ...

405: The Interior Of Bethlem Hospital, Urbane Metcalf, 1818 AD
The Interior Of Bethlem Hospital, which he published immediately after his release, is thus not only a unique insight into the new regime after only two years, it also affords Metcalf the opportunity to make comparisons with the old Moorfields Bethlem. While the new, according to Metcalf is infinitely preferable, his pamphlet is nevertheless a protest over conditions, in the line of Bruckshaw and Belcher, which are intolerable, he asserts, because of the corruption and brutality of the keepers. Metcalf was a pedlar, though he was also apparently able to work as a tailor. His 1817 admission, at least, was at a time when he regarded himself as heir to the Danish throne, being the son of the Princess Matilda. If he was at times, according to the Bethlem case notes, a difficult patient, it was owing to his complaints about the food and the ill treatment of fellow inmates, and to his irritability, rather than to any delusions of grandeur. This is borne out by the style of his The Interior ... ...

407: Cigarette Smoking and the Bible
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others". In other words, be considerate. Be thoughtful. Smokers cannot be thoughtful when smoking in a non-smokers car, it will be weeks before he will be able to get all the odor from the upholstery. In a house-, cigarette odor will linger for 2 or 3 days. To non-smokers this is intolerable, to a few individuals smoke from other's cigarettes can produce dangerous toxic reactions. Smoking is against the principles of being careful not to offend and of being considerate. Smoking is wasteful of time and of money. Christians are to be faithful stewards (Read Matthew 25:14-30), for, like our bodies, our money and our time, are not ours, but Christ's. Christians also need to come face to face with the shocking realities that while more than 90% of all lung cancer victims are smokers, scientific studies have also shown that smokers have more than three time as many heart attacks as do non-smokers. But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."" Numbers 20:11-12 Today, many sites are rejected as being possible candidates for Kadesh Barnes because there "is not enough water". Yet the real Kadesh Barnea of the Bible was described as a waterless place. There was a spring at the time of Abraham, but no evidence it was even still flowing at the time of the exodus in 1446 BC. He considered the important feature of hysteria the 'fit' or episodic disturbance of sensation, motion and consciousness short only of 'universal Convulsions' or epileptic grand mal, and accordingly classified it under 'Convulsive Diseases'. Today however many of the symptoms he called 'hysterical' are recognised as belonging to the epilepsies as those arising in abnormalities of the temporal lobes. Yet by Willis's great authority fits continued for more than another 200 years to be considered the essential feature of hysteria and it remained linked with epilepsy as in Charcot's hybrid 'hystero-epilepsy'. Even today many textbooks give hysteria as the main differential diagnosis of fits. Secondly, Willis gave one of the most extensive accounts of the whole field of mental illness which had appeared up to that time. He attributed 'melancholy' or affective psychosis to 'passions of the heart'; and 'madness' or psychosis accompanied by thought disorder, delusions or hallucinations - that ... ...

A treatise of Anger John Downame (?-1652) 1609 AD Click to View Click to View See also: History of Psychiatry homepage Click to View Introduction: In 1609 AD, John Downame describes how anger, being a "disease of the mind", has both a physiological effect on the body (red face, high blood pressure, hair standing on end) but a spiritual effect on the mind (loss of reason, wits). There are many case stories of people driven to raving madness because of unchecked anger. Ephesians 4:26 says, "Be angry, but to not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger." He states that the behaviour and effects of shorts bursts of anger are identical to madness, except for the length of time. His solution to anger to be silent or speak softly, is taken straight from the Bible: "A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger." In fact the psychiatry industry do not treat the various psychopathic personality disorders since they understand they cannot be fixed and are determined to be untreatable. A photograph of the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon which is published in the book, A New Witness For Christ In America, Vol. 1, page 216, proves that the printer was not responsible for the grammatical errors which appeared in the first edition A second handwritten manuscript known as the printer's manuscript also confirms this. (See photo at the end of the introduction.) Photos of the printer's manuscript can be seen at the University of Utah Library Special Collections. George Reynolds quotes the following from an interview with John H. Gilbert: "'Hyrum Smith always brought the manuscript to the office; he would have it under his coat and all buttoned up as carefully as though it was so much gold. He said at the time that it was translated from plates by the power of God, and they were very particular about it. We had a great deal of trouble with it. It was not punctuated at all. Here is what Walter Rea says in his book, "The White Lie": One of the unwritten stories in Adventist history is the influence that James White had in forming the ideas and sentences that came out under Ellen's name and pen. Two of these were Life Incidents in Connection with the Great Advent Movement, as Illustrated by the Three Angels of Revelation XIV, published in 1868, and in 1875 Sketches of ... One reason is now clear why much of the information in the 1884 edition of The Great Controversy could not have been included in the earlier works of Ellen on the same subject (Spiritual Gifts, published 1858-64). James had not yet gotten around to copying it from J. N Andrews; so it was not available to Ellen at the time. The 1888 and 1911 editions of The Great Controversy went back to James White's compilation of doctrines and events and picked up even more of his findings and ideas. But never ... ...

... Any sailor would immediately recognize the area between the island and the shore as a natural anchorage. Much later, I found a 1909 British sailing chart for the Gulf of Aqabah that identifies this area as the "Faraun Island Anchorage." Several 19th-century travelers also observed that this was the only natural anchorage in the entire northern part of the gulf. The modern ports of Eilat and Aqabah, by contrast, are wholly artificial constructions. Between dives we devoted our time to exploring the island and in particular the perimeter wall described by Rothenberg and Hashimshoni. Not only was it of substantial proportions, it also contained many well-built, projecting towers. One feature in particular affected and directed all my future thinking. On the southwestern edge of the island, in a low area between the two southern hills, there is a pool, identified by Rothenberg and Hashimshoni as a harbor. A bar separates this pool from the natural anchorage. On close examination, I found ... ...

... Since the gospel was first preached in the large cities, these became centres of evangelization for the surrounding districts. Naturally, a very close relation subsisted between the mother church and the congregations organized by her missionary efforts. The high responsibilities of the episcopal office in the great cities tended to bring to such positions men of stamp and reputation. Apart from their personal qualities, their very position would give them a certain authority. Nothing was more natural, then, than to appeal to them in case of dispute. Prerogatives, awarded in the first instance by mere custom, could easily acquire in time a constitutional force. Hence, a kind of jurisdiction over the surrounding territory became attached to the bishops of large cities, and the rank of archbishop more or less definitely established." (Henry C. But since so many people have stopped going to church, they have no moral values any more and likely have never heard of the "Ten Commandments". One case involved a woman who admitted to making false allegations for the specific purpose of gaining sole custody of the children to the judge. Apart from a few sharp words from the judge, she did not pay for this crime. In fact her case is being used as a model for other mothers to follow, now that they know they can falsely charge their husbands with sexual abuse of the children, get immediate sole custody, without consequences. Since assessments take 30-40 hours, they take 30 - 40 weeks, if you meet with the "assessor" only one hour a week! During this time the status quo is not changed until the assessment is submitted to the court. B.
