404: What role does the Holy Spirit in my Conversion?
This idea has descended to our age from the old doctrine that man is totally depraved in heart and soul and must have a miraculous spiritual operation to turn him from sin to his Heavenly Father. But the scriptures plainly teach that the Holy Spirit works through the agency of the revealed Word of God! Still, while proclaiming that the manner of the Spirit's working in the Christian age is through the power of the Word, we must not be guilty of thinking the Spirit is not involved in our conversion. Conversion is the process by which man turns from sin to God. It is the "change" from the old life in sin to the new life in Christ. Conversion takes place in our mind, while forgiveness takes place in the mind of God. In the process of conversion, there are no new faculties or powers imparted that are felt in any physical way. Any theory which takes away the Word of God in conversion, or takes away man's responsibility or accountability, cannot be true. Jesus declared that the Holy ... ...

In Matthew 28:18, before Christ ascended into heaven, He was giving His apostles some last minute instructions concerning those they would baptize. Jesus said, "Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you." Everything the Lord has commanded us is to be observed. We are to do all that God says and in the way He says to do it. Jesus says in Luke 6:46, "But why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" In worship we must do all God has commanded and we must do nothing He has not authorized. Our worship must be from the heart with all reverence and sincerity. We must give Him our very best. Then and only then will we be worshipping God "in spirit and in truth". of the Lord accompany this change in a person's life which we all call conversion. The Lord saw fit to record for us in His Holy Word at least eight specific examples of conversion in the book of Acts. It is worth noting that in each example of conversion, there is preaching or teaching of the Gospel followed by a certain response to that preaching or teaching by the person converted. The first recorded example is found in Acts, Chapter 2. When Peter and the other apostles filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke to the great multitude on the day of Pentecost and told them that God had raised His Son, whom they had crucified, to be the Saviour of all who call upon His name (verse 21). Believing the apostle's message and being convicted of the enormous sin of rejecting and consenting to the crucifixion of God's Son, they asked "Men and brethren, what shall we do? ... To speak of the pre-existence of the Son is to say that God did not begin to redeem men when Jesus came into the world, but that throughout all ages the redeeming power and the sacrificial work of God has been at work. To speak of the pre-existence of the Son means that the love which was demonstrated on Calvary is an eternal movement of the heart of God to men (The Mind of Paul, p. 59). I do not think William Barclay was a Christian. In his autobiography he clearly states that he was not a Trinitarian. He did not believe that Jesus is God. He denied the doctrine of the Vicarious Atonement. He also denied the Virgin Birth of Christ, and his view of the Holy Spirit fits no discernible orthodox definition in the history of the Christian Church. Apparently many sincere people are trusting in their sincerity for salvation. But is sincerity enough? Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" John 14: 6. Now what could this possibly mean if sincerity alone is sufficient? If there is no other way to salvation than through Christ, as he clearly stated here, then sincerity alone will not do, will it?
