101: Bethlehem
... book 3, Chapter XLIII. A Farther Notice of the Churches at Bethlehem) Bethlehem.196 [City of David. In the lot of the] tribe of Judah (in which our Lord and Savior was born.] It is six miles south of Jerusalem near the road descending to Hebron. There the tombs of Jesse and David are pointed out. [One mile farther. near the tower of Ader, which means "tower of the flock," is where the shepherds heard prophetically of the Lord's birth before it happened. Also near this same Bethlehem is pointed out the tomb of one of the kings of Judaea, Archalaeus, which is reached first on a narrow path diverting from the main highway to our cell.] Also called Bethleem is the son of Efratha, (i.e. of Mary) according to Paralipomenon (book it is fully spoken. 102: Sola Scriptura: The story of Michael and the Devil over Moses ...
will. We are offended that anyone would suggest the authors of the Bible rely upon human records and not the Holy Spirit. "no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Pet 1:20-21) There were actually several conflicting oral traditions and variations on this story. Scripture confirms by direct stamp of approval of the Holy Spirit, which oral tradition of the story is valid and which are not. This actually proves oral tradition is not a valid form of authority, since until scripture "chose between the traditions", there was no way of knowing which was the correct one. The same thing is identically true between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. Both fight the other claiming their oral tradition is the valid one. Sola Scriptura can only bring unity. 103: Sola Scriptura: 2 John 12 does not prove the need for extra-Biblical ...
Yes, there are many events and stories not written in the Bible, but what is written is all we need for our faith. That's what John says in Jn 20:31. The many things could have been details of the book of Revelation. The many things could have been non-essential personal items about himself, or public rebukes for the sin of adultery, or some heresy like using only water for the cup of the Lord's supper. To suggest that what John wanted to say to them face to face is some important extra-biblical doctrine is just as likely as the things we suggest as possible. Until the tradition advocates can specifically tell what exactly what this oral tradition is, their argument becomes self refuting. They are always using these kinds of passages to open the door to their many false doctrines not found in scripture. Click to View More Pro-Oral Church tradition arguments refuted! 104: Sola Scriptura: The saying of Jesus in Acts 20:35 does not prove ...
"oral saying" of Jesus that are not found in scripture. We want the average Orthodox and Catholic church member to note that their churches never supply such lists of statements because none exist except for what scripture records. However, this may have been spoken to Paul directly by Jesus after he was converted in Acts 9. In other words, Paul may in fact be the only one this was said to, after Jesus had ascended as we see in 2 Cor 12:9. "And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me." 2 Corinthians 12:9 So Acts 20:35 may be exactly like 2 Cor 12:9, in that both are sayings of Jesus that were revealed only to Paul, long after Jesus had ascended into heaven. do we draw up our rule. Since the Lord Jesus Christ sent the apostles to preach, ... those very churches which the apostles rounded in person, by declaring the gospel to them directly themselves, both viva voce [living voice], as the phrase is, and subsequently by their epistles. " (Tertullian, The prescription against the heretics, Ch 21). This shows that the Apostolic Fathers viewed the scriptures as containing the totality of the "living voice". Therefore, even Tertullian operated on sola Scriptura because the only traditions he would accept were those recorded in scripture. When Tertullian does discuss traditions not in scripture, he refers not to the Living voice of the apostles, but of expedient tradition. 109: Sola Scriptura: 2 Timothy 2:2 does not prove apostolic succession ...
Timothy have been a bishop at Rome if this teaches succession? The tradition that Timothy was bishop of Ephesus is very late and most scholars believe it is a fabrication. The Orthodox church, with nothing else, just blindly accept it at true. No tradition says that Timothy was Paul's successor. We have no line of successors in history either. Why didn't Paul make this claim of succession to someone who was to be bishop of Rome. And why didn't Peter make this statement? Finally, it is indeed odd for Roman Catholics to claim this verse teaches succession when the church at Ephesus, where the fabricated tradition says Timothy was bishop, is under the umbrella of the Greek Orthodox church. If I were Roman Catholic I would never use any verse that implied Timothy was specifically included in succession of any kind. Click to View More Pro-Oral Church tradition arguments refuted! Hanukkah is a non-biblical Jewish feast day, of a purely human origin that was instituted by Judas Machabeus in 164 B.C. mentioned in 1 Maccabees 4:56, and referenced in the New Testament: "At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem" John 10:22. Another human origin celebration was that of Jephthah's daughter: "Thus it became a custom in Israel, that the daughters of Israel went yearly to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year." The question remains, therefore, how did they decide which interpretation is correct?" He actually uses Prov 8:22 as an example of why sola Scriptura doesn't work. What it proves, is that tradition doesn't work, because most Trinitarians today, including the Roman Catholic church, do not apply Prov 8:22 ... that prior to Arius coming along, the orthodox view of the passage was to apply it to the whole of Christ, without ever even taking note of whether is applied merely to Christ's humanity.
