Fighting the Good Fight
The Final Page

The Bible tells us to “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called…” (1 Tim. 6:12). This fight is a spiritual battle that takes place in the heart. One thing we notice here is that it is in our fighting the battle that we take hold of eternal life. It won’t just happen. We have to take hold of it.
What does this fight entail? Well, our struggle is not fought with physical weapons of war. Specifically, the context mentions several forms the battle takes.
First, we must avoid certain things. Here in 1 Tim. 6 we see in verse 3 that we are to avoid doctrines different from those that the Lord has given to us. Verse 4 tells us to avoid envy, strife and abusive language. Verses 9 and 10 tell us to defeat greed and the love of money.
Second, we are to pursue certain things as well. Verse 11 tells us to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Taking hold of eternal life involves pursuing these things.
Finally, we are to keep the commandment of Christ, according to verse 14.
In this way, we “fight the good fight of faith” and “take hold of eternal life.” This is what the Scripture says. God’s word is true - He is the “blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and the Lord of lords” (vs. 15).
