Psychologists are modern "Witch prickers"
"In discussing the witch-hunts of England, Christina Hole writes: "One of the most terrifying features of the general witchcraft belief was the fact that no one knew for certain who was, or was not, a witch." And she continues: "The most deplorable by-product of the general fear of witches was the professional witch-finder," whose pay depended on the number of witches discovered. The witch frenzy spawned a new profession of "witch-prickers," some of whom were physicians and some of whom were "common prickers." Their practice was to stick a pin into the skin of anyone suspected of being a witch and, based on the degree of pain or bleeding, they either confirmed those as witches or recommended further "examination" by an ordeal of immersion in water - never acquitting them.

After the publication of the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of witches), the manual for witch-hunters, "a class of men sprang up in Europe who made it the sole business of their lives to discover and burn the witches," and these lay-prickers along with physicians became the first recognized legal experts. "The parliaments had encouraged the delusions [in witchcraft] both in England and Scotland, and by arming these fellow [prickers] with a sort of authority, had in a, manner forced the magistrates and ministers to receive their evidence.

Just as the power and prestige of these prickers rose with the increasing identification of witchcraft, so too has the influence and income of psychologists risen with the increasing reports of abuse. Like their predecessors, these twentieth-century prickers have gained status and built businesses on identifying invisible signs." (Manufacturing Victims, Dr. Tana Dineen, 2001, p 158)

"If these shocking presumptions were not an actual description of the current state of the Psychology industry, they might be laughable. But regrettably, these simplistic theories are widely applied and widely accepted in a society that naively trusts psychologists to be scientific and objective, optimistic and positive, and caring and other-oriented." (Manufacturing Victims, Dr. Tana Dineen, 2001, p 266)
