Baptism of Jesus: Matthew 3:16-17

Who says they didn't have video tape in the first century!

"After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."" (Matthew 3:16-17)

  1. Video tape doesn't lie! Here we have a very graphic image of the Father speaking from heaven, the Holy Spirit resting on Jesus' shoulder as a dove and the Son standing in the water getting baptized.
  2. This passage sends Modalists into fits of confusion!

Great commission of Jesus: Matthew 28:19

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19)

A. Primary arguments the prove distinction:

  1. Mt 28:19 is a powerhouse verse for Trinitarians: It uses a singular NAME in reference to three distinct persons, each of which have the definite article before them.
  2. The use of three separate definite articles before each of three persons: Mt 28:19. "name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit"
  3. Name of three: Matt 28:19. Notice the singular name and three persons is directly foreshadowed in Gen 48:16 that refers to Abraham and Isaac by a singular name!

B. Plural persons referred to by a single name:

  1. "baptizing them in the name [singular in Greek] of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19)
  2. "May my name live on in them, And the name [singular in Hebrew] of my fathers Abraham and Isaac" (Genesis 48:16)
  3. "He created them [plural] male and female, and He blessed them [plural] and named [singluar] them Man [singlar] in the day when they were created." (Genesis 5:2)
  4. "But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the name [singular] of their brothers in their inheritance." (Gen 48:6)

Gen 5:2

Gen 48:16

the name [singluar] of
