Holy Spirit in the New Testament

Miraculous Holy Spirit in the New Testament

Introduction:

1.         In the bible there are only 9 categories of supernatural power which are listed in 1 Cor 12

a.           Any supernatural event in the Bible falls into one of these nine categories!

b.          "For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues." (1 Corinthians 12:8–10)

2.         There are about 23 metaphors that describe supernatural power endowed by the Holy Spirit.

a.           Each metaphor is equal to the other.

b.          All metaphors or synonymous and interchangeable with each other in all bible text and contexts.

c.           During the apostolic age, if you spoke in tongues you had the “baptism of the Holy Spirit”.

3.         FALSE DOCTRINE: “Measures of the Holy SpiritTHIS IS A FALSE CHART: STOP USING IT!

a.           This was taught for over 100 years in the churches and has done great damage by falsely differentiating the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a special class of miraculous endowment limited to the apostles, when it really applies to any Christian who has any of the 9 supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit.

b.          The false doctrine of the “measures of the Holy Spirit” is also the foundation upon which the false personal non-miraculous indwelling of the Holy Spirit rests.

c.           This notion of limiting the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” to the apostles ONLY was a false theology developed last century to refute modern day Pentecostals and Charismatics who claim to have miraculous power of the Holy Spirit like the first century church. It was never successful in countering charismatics, but it distorted the theology of the brethren in its wake and mislead hundreds of thousands into error.

d.          Known as the “Measures of the Holy Spirit” theology popularized into countless handout and overhead charts to create a nice neat sermon for Sunday morning:

                                                               i.      Jesus had the Holy Spirit without measure based upon John 3:34 of the KJV

ii.      the Apostles had the Baptismal measure

iii.      the Corinthians had the spiritual gifts miraculous measure

iv.      and finally, the non-miraculous personal indwelling ordinary measure.

e.           The entire structure is based upon a false reading of italicised words in the KJV of John 3:34 to wrongly imply that the Holy Spirit was given TO JESUS without measure. “God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him” (KJV). The key words UNTO HIM are lacking in the Greek.

f.            The verse actually says that God gives the spirit without measure TO EVERYONE. “for He gives the Spirit without measure.” (NASB)

g.           Brethren continue to use this chart not even understanding the entire theological framework rests upon a single bible verse (John 3:34) that says EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE to what the chart suggests.

4.         With only two exceptions in Acts 2 and 10, the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit were ALWAYS and without exception, transmitted through the laying on of the apostles hands:

a.           Moses laid hands on Joshua to impart spiritual gifts: Deut 34:9

b.          The apostles laid hands on the 7 in Acts 6 to impart spiritual gifts: Acts 6:8; 8:6

c.           Paul laid hands on Timothy to impart spiritual gifts with the consent of the elders of the local church: 1 Tim 4:14; 2 Tim 1:14

d.          Peter and John laid hands on the Samaritans to impart spiritual gifts: Acts 8:14–21. Notice miracle worker Philip could not transmit gifts, but he had to call for the Apostles in Acts 8.

e.           Paul laid hands on the Ephesians to impart spiritual gifts: Acts 19:6

5.         The Gift of the Holy Spirit is given by Metonymy where it sounds like the Holy Spirit Himself is given, when in fact he has given a gift:

a.           Acts 2:17 pour fourth OF my Spirit

                                                               i.      1 Jn 3:24 & 4:23 "we know we abide in Him by the Spirit He has given us" & "we know we abide in Him... he has given us OF Spirit"

ii.      Jn 7:39 & Acts 2:33 "Spirit not yet given/Jesus not glorified" & "Jesus glorified/poured forth THIS (manifestations, not the Spirit) which you now see and hear"

iii.      Acts 10:45-46 Spirit poured out = Gift of HS = speak in tongues: "And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God."

b.        Spirit indwelt Timothy as a metaphor for supernatural empowerment:

                                                               i.      2 Ti 1:14 guard through the gospel through the HS who dwells in us. I have always been puzzled how a non-miraculous indwelling could "guard" anything. Miracles certainly confirmed and guarded the gospel.

ii.      2 Ti 1:6 gift of God which is in you through laying on of hands.

iii.      1 Ti 4:14 spiritual gift within you.

iv.      HS dwells = gift of God within = spiritual gift within.

c.         Simon saw (Acts 8) the Spirit (not himself personally, for indwelling advocates usually say that the Spirit is given at baptism, but gifts) was given through apostles hands.

                                                               i.      Acts 2:38 and Acts 8 are identical.

ii.      Both have the HS given through meronomy, both literally mean supernatural endowment from the HS.

iii.      This is the language of gifts of the first century and throughout the NT.

iv.      If someone had spiritual gifts...HE HAD THE HS.

                                                             v.      If he was ungifted like us today...HE DID NOT HAVE THE SPIRIT in the miraculous sense.

vi.      This is the most critical thing to comprehend about this discussion.

d.        Take a close look at 1 Cor 14:15-16

                                                               i.      1 Cor 14:15-16 "I shall pray with the spirit and I shall pray with the mind also; I shall sing with the spirit and I shall sing with the mind also. Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the Amen"

ii.      pray & sing WITH Spirit = gifted man/ ungifted man = without Spirit

iii.      Gifted = in the spirit; UNGIFTED = OUTSIDE THE SPIRIT

e.        Metaphors like “Fell upon” and “filled” prove it is power the Holy Spirit is giving men, not personally getting inside them, which is impossible.

                                                               i.      Expressions "HS fell upon" in Acts 10 refer to gifts the gives HS from Himself.

ii.      Expressions "filled with the HS" refers to power from the HS not the HS himself.

iii.      Did the HS leave the apostles in Acts 4 where they prayed and were filled with the HS?

6.         No Personal non-miraculous indwelling except via metaphor and symbolism:

a.           First century Christians had no understanding of a non-miraculous indwelling. IF so where? The reception of the Spirit ALWAYS came with supernatural power, Acts 1:8 "you shall receive power when the HS has come upon you"

b.          The only way first century Christians KNEW they had the "indwelling" Spirit is through miraculous manifestations.

c.           Most of the time, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit means miracles and not some non-miraculous personal indwelling as confused by some.

d.          It is heresy to claim the indwelling of the Holy Spirit with verses that clearly reference a miraculous indwelling in the context!

e.           Personal indwelling advocates are misguided to misapply supernatural indwelling passages to evidence a non-miraculous personal indwelling.

f.            Apart from “thus says the Lord” passages (misapplied) they cannot prove they have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside them.

g.           Christians in the first century could rightly claim to have the Holy Spirit indwelling them as evidenced by possession of one of the 9 spiritual gifts of 1 Cor 12.

h.          Personal indwelling advocates use the word alone for their belief and have no evidence or feelings!

i.             The non-miraculous personal indwelling that is undetectable to our senses and doesn't accomplish anything they are aware of.

7.         The Holy Spirit does indwells both Old Testament saints and New Testament Christians in exactly the same way.

a.           Indwelling metonymically of possession of the Holy Spirit when empowered by Supernatural gifts in both the OT & NT

b.          Indwelling metaphorically to indicate God’s fellowship in Solomon’s Temple and the New Testament “church temple”

c.           Indwelling representatively in righteous individuals of godly conduct in both the OT & NT

d.          None of these are a personal literal indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

8.         The Christian today can say that the Holy Spirit indwells him with confidence:

a.           The Old Testament saint and Christian both have the “metaphoric” indwelling in the temple of God as a symbol of fellowship.

b.          The Old Testament saint and Christian both have the “representative” indwelling as they live godly lives and “walk by the spirit” in obedience to God’s will.

c.           Neither of these affirmations are a literal, personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

b.                  New Testament: Jn 16:13; 2 Pet 1:19-21; 1 Cor 1:6-13

c.                  Inspiration doesn’t change character:

                                                               i.      Baalam: Num 22-24

ii.      Saul wanted to kill David: 1 Sa 19:18-24

a.                  The Holy Spirit uses the word as His instrument to teach, bring sinners to repentance and eternal salvation.

b.                  The chart below proves the word of God is the instrument of the Holy Spirit.

c.                  This chart DOES NOT prove the Holy Spirit works ONLY through the word since we know He continues to work providentially down to the present age.

d.                  This chart DOES NOT DISPROVE the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which is easily disproved using several other lines of reasoning.

II. Purpose and function of the nine spiritual gifts:

A. Purpose of Gifts

1.      Confirm prophet speaking from God: Heb 2:3,4

iii.      if no interpreter present no one may speak in tongues in assembly

9.      Interpretation of tongues: 1 Cor 14:13,28 -

C. Distribution:

1.      Holy Spirit always given through the laying on of Apostles hands: Acts 8:14-19

E. Gift of tongues is extinct today, those who claim to have tongues speak gibberish, not a human language:

1.      In the Los Angeles area the Rainbow Revival Church sent out an instruction sheet giving instructions as to how one may receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit:

a.       Words Of Praise To Receive The Holy Ghost.

b.      Jesus who baptized 120 believers with the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost 10 days after He ascended to heaven, is still baptizing Christians with the Holy Ghost today Acts 2:1-4. Usually Jesus baptizes believers with the Holy Ghost while they are praising the Lord, and their words change from words of praise to unknown tongues, which is proof that they have received the Holy Ghost.  We suggest these words of praise to use while seeking the Baptism.  To try to say words of praise too perfectly hinders the Holy Ghost from speaking in His Heavenly languages through you. Say the words below out loud and as you praise God, do NOT try to stop stammering. In fact, the more you get the words of praise mixed up, the easier it is for the Holy Ghost to take control of your tongue and speak in unknown tongues through you. Isa. 28:11: "For with stammering lips and another tongue will I speak to this people.” To Start Seeking, say the words of Praise in a paragraph below over and over very rapidly for 2 or 3 minutes, then go to the next paragraph, repeating the words of Praise in each paragraph about the same length of time.  After you have repeated the words in all of the paragraphs, you may start at the beginning, and use these words of praise over and over.

c.       Say these words over and over very fast to speak in tongues:

                                                               i.      Glory To God, Hallelujah Glory To God Hallelujah Glory To

ii.      Praise Precious Jesus, Prince Of Peace, Praise Precious Jesus

iii.      I Love You Jesus, I Love You Jesus, I Love You Jesus,

iv.      Jesus Savior Save Sinful Souls, Sanctify Saints To Serve Thee

                                                             v.      Praise God The Father, God The Son, And God The Holy Ghost,

vi.      I Beseech Blessed Baptizer Bestow Bountiful Baptismal Blessings

vii.      Glory To Jesus Glory To Jesus Glory  To Jesus Glory To

viii.      While Wholeheartedly Worshipping, Willing Waiting, Jesus Baptize Me With The Holy Ghost.  While Wholeheartedly Worshipping

ix.      Glory To God, Gracious Generous Giver Of Good Gifts.  Glory To…

d.      So what Happens? The individual commits a few phrases to memory and begins to say them over and over.  His tongue gets twisted, but he must keep on trying.  Finally he is muttering, stammering and stuttering and he blames it all on the Holy Spirit ... HOW SHAREFUL! Now I wonder if Peter and the rest of the apostles had this list in Acts 2 while they were waiting in the upper room for the Holy Spirit?  Do you reckon that they were practicing all that time?  Of course, the above is IGNORANCE GONE TO SEED. I hope that we all understand that those who were baptized with the Holy Spirit in the days of the apostles were given languages that could be understood as the Bible reveals in Acts 2:8 -1 1; and they were not the kind of gibberish that would be produced by one who practiced according to the "Rainbow Revival formula.” (comments by J. T. Smith)

2.      Tongues in the Bible was always a spoken human language.

a.       The reference to “tongues of Angels” in 1 Cor 13 is poetic exaggeration, as are all the other phrases in context.

b.      Strange 100% of the time modern tongue speakers are speaking “tongues of angels” and never a human language that can be recorded and identified.

3.      Tongues spoken today is music not language:

a.       Over 50 years ago, language experts at universities studied tongues and concluded that it was music not language!

b.      Each tongue speaker had a different number of “piano keys” which all produced a distinct and repeatable sound.

c.       Each tongue speakers sounds were different from the other.

d.      Depending on the imagination and intelligence of the tongue speaker, they would PLAY from 8 – 30 different musical notes.

e.      However, when each sound (note) was plotted on music paper, it became clear that tongues was music not language.

f.        This effectively and scientifically proves tongues today is gibberish and not language and certainly not miraculous!

g.       Don’t blame meaningless, illegible gibberish on the Holy Spirit.

23.  Four related metaphors for supernatural power: STABLISHES; ANOINTED; SEALED; PLEDGE

A pledge is a tangible down payment of more of the same to come in the future as illustrated in Heb 6:4-5. A seal is directly related to ancient document security. A seal ring is an inscribed stone pressed into clay. A document was tied up with string then the knots had clay pressed onto them and a seal was inscribed so that nobody could untie the knots. The miraculous Holy Spirit was that seal that guaranteed our salvation in the first century and us today through the fruits of the supernatural: the bible. Even in the first century, those who were not endowed with supernatural power were part of clearly supernatural community known as the church. The Jews who watched Moses on Mt. Sinai were not supernaturally empowered, but they knew Moses was a spokesman for God. In the same way all Christians are sealed even today through the history of the supernatural apostolic age which produced the word of God. The Bible is the tangible “pledge” of our salvation today that God gave us.

4 keywords that reference supernatural power of the Holy Spirit

"For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come," (Hebrews 6:4–5)

1.      Each term can be applied equally to anyone in the Bible who had miraculous power of God.

2.      Being “filled with the Holy Spirit” is the same as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit” and the same as speaking in “tongues”.

Conclusion:

1.         Each metaphoric term can be applied equally to anyone in the Bible who had miraculous power of God.

2.         Each metaphor describes the identical thing in different ways.

3.         Interchangeable and synonymous Metaphors of Supernatural power:

a.           “filled with the Holy Spirit”

b.          “indwelling of the Holy Spirit”

c.           “Holy Spirit dwelling inside you”

d.          “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”

e.           “tongues”

4.         Anyone who spoke in tongues had been baptized in the Holy Spirit.

a.           When Apostle Paul laid his hands on the members of the church at Corinth to impart one of the 9 supernatural gifts of 1 Cor 12, he was “baptizing them in the Holy Spirit.

b.          To limit baptism of the Holy Spirit to the apostles proper, then Cornelius as an exception is absurd, contradictory, illogical and unnecessary

5.         This notion of limiting the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” to the apostles ONLY was a false theology developed last century to refute modern day Pentecostals and Charismatics who claim to have miraculous power of the Holy Spirit like the first century church.

a.           Known as the “measures of the Holy Spirit” theology, Jesus had the Holy Spirit without measure, the Apostles had the Baptismal measure, the Corinthians had the spiritual gifts measure, and finally, the non-miraculous personal indwelling measure.

b.          The entire structure is based upon a false reading of italicised words in the KJV of John 3:34 to wrongly imply that the Holy Spirit was given TO JESUS without measure. “God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him” (KJV). The key words UNTO HIM are lacking in the Greek.

c.           The verse actually says that God gives the spirit without measure TO EVERYONE. “for He gives the Spirit without measure.” (NASB)

d.          This was taught for over 100 years in the churches and has done great damage by differentiating the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a special class of miraculous endowment limited to the apostles, when it really applies to any Christian who has any of the 9 supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit.

e.           The false doctrine of the “measures of the Holy Spirit” is also the foundation upon which the false personal non-miraculous indwelling of the Holy Spirit rests.

6.         There are two ways of refuting modern-day Pentecostals and charismatics who claim to have miraculous power:

a.           Ask them to show you a miracle: MERE WORDS VS TRUE POWER:

i.                     "But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I shall find out, not the words of those who are arrogant [in claim inspirational equality with Paul] but their power. For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power." (1 Corinthians 4:19-20)

ii.                   "and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power," (1 Corinthians 2:4)

b.          Quote 1 Cor 13:8-13 that explicitly says that tongues ceased when the revelation of God was complete in the final canon of the 27 book of the New Testament:

i.           "Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:8–13)

8.         The Christian today can say that the Holy Spirit indwells him with confidence:

a.           The Old Testament saint and Christian both have the “metaphoric” indwelling in the temple of God as a symbol of fellowship.

b.          The Old Testament saint and Christian both have the “representative” indwelling as they live godly lives and “walk by the spirit” in obedience to God’s will.

c.           Neither of these two affirmations of the indwelling are a literal, personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
